Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy

As part of the exceptional range of evidence based therapeutic approaches available at the Clinic we provide Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy sessions (MBCT).

MBCT has been widely researched for its effectiveness as a treatment for ADHD and other common mental health challenges. The evidence strongly supports MBCT as being an effective therapeutic treatment. In the practice, we encourage a combined holistic treatment path,  with both allopathic and naturopathic treatments combined with therapy.

What Is MBCT?

In order to affect any change in our lives we must develop awareness of our thoughts and feelings and attunement with our body's experience to allow us to process our emotional experiences into a coherent narrative. When the mind and body are under stress our ability to process and order our thoughts, feelings and memories becomes impaired creating negative thoughts and feelings and unhelpful patterns of relating to self and others. If left unaddressed over a prolonged period of time chronic stress can be the cause of several illnesses both mental and physical.

MBCT is a method that combines traditional Cognitive Therapy with Mindfulness.

Cognitive behavior therapy is a treatment which supports identification of negative, and limiting thoughts and patterns of behavior and supports progression towards healthier habits.

Mindfulness is the practice of training attention and awareness, in an attitude of self-acceptance and compassion.

When combined together as a therapy, the increased awareness gained from Mindfulness is used to change and inform our mental life and choice-making, liberating us of old habits of mind.

What can I expect in my MBCT sessions?

Your MBCT therapist will work with you to assess and understand what you would like to achieve, tailoring a treatment program to meet your individual needs and goals.

Working collaboratively with you, in an emotionally safe and contained space, your therapist will help guide you to bring interpretation and meaning to your biography whilst integrating self-regulation and somatic quieting skills to achieve a greater experience of presence.

This will enable re-framing of your historic beliefs and memories whilst integrating various parts of the brain and developing new neural pathways to support healthier and happier ways of being.

The strategies you will learn in sessions can be effective within 4-8 weeks of practice, depending on the level of engagement both in and between sessions. The skills gained are transferable into everyday life, enabling them to be resources on an ongoing basis in all areas of your life.
